Cleaning and caring for your Lux leather

Cleaning and caring for your Lux leather

Different garments use different leathers, so one care method does not suit every piece. If you are unsure which leather your item is made from, please ask us before cleaning or pressing it.

Which leather is in my garment?

  • All our leather underwear is made from glove leather tanned by Southcombe in Somerset.
  • Our jeans, skirts and shirts are made from Italian lamb nappa. Ask us if you need to know which leather is in your particular piece.

Cleaning glove leather

For light marks, gently wipe with a slightly damp cloth. For a greasy mark, a tiny drop of detergent and a cotton bud may help, but please use caution. Do not rub hard, as this can fade the colour. Let the leather dry naturally at room temperature, away from radiators, tumble dryers, hair dryers and direct sunlight. For heavier soiling, consult a specialist leather cleaner.

We used to use Pittards leather that could be washed, so you may have seen our older washing instructions. The leather we use now needs different care. Please do not soak or machine-wash your garment unless we have confirmed that your particular piece is suitable. Some customers have found their colours lose dye in water. Please contact us for advice about your specific item or stain.

Cleaning Valencia and Madrid leather

We do not currently have supplier-specific cleaning instructions for these garment leathers. Do not assume the glove-leather instructions or older immersion advice apply to them. Contact us before treating a mark, and use a specialist leather cleaner for heavier soiling.

Ironing glove leather

We iron our glove leather as part of making garments, and you can press glove-leather pieces afterwards to remove wrinkles. Use a dry iron with the steam turned off. Place a silk organza pressing cloth or silk scarf between the iron and leather. Set the iron to high and keep it moving as you press through the cloth to avoid scorching. Never use steam.

Leather corsets

These require specialist dry cleaning because of their metal boning.
